Not only the city itself is worth exploring but also the surrounding area. The easiest way of getting to know the north of Spain is to rent a car and to drive along the coast. The beautiful town of Santillana del Mar and the caves of Altamira are only a short drive away and a must for everyone staying in this region.
A little bit further away (approximately 105 km) but also full of interesting sights and highlights is the city of Bilbao. The trip from Santander to Bilbao is quite easy and only takes about one hour and twenty minutes. Another fascinating trip is to the city of Burgos which is about two and a half hours away.
To visit the highlights and monuments in Santander itself you do not need to take your rent a car. The public transportation system is good and you will able to make a trip around the city without having to look for parking spaces.
